Why infinity pools belong in the hills
An infinity pool at sea level is a nice photograph. An infinity pool in the Wayanad hills is something else entirely: the water's edge dissolves into tea gardens and valleys, and on misty mornings you genuinely cannot tell where the pool ends and the clouds begin.
Wayanad's elevation, between 700 and 2,100 metres, makes it one of the few places in South India where you can swim at cloud level. The water stays refreshingly cool, the air smells of rain and cardamom, and even in peak season the hills keep the light soft.
Pool or view? In Wayanad, insist on both
Plenty of resorts in Wayanad have pools; far fewer have pools with a reason to linger. Before booking, check the pool's actual orientation: does it face the valley, a wall, or a parking lot? Photographs taken at clever angles can hide a lot.
Also ask about the pool's season. During heavy monsoon weeks some hill pools close for safety; if a swim is the centrepiece of your trip, plan around October to May, when the skies are kinder and the valley views run for kilometres.
Make it a morning ritual
The secret the brochures don't tell you: the best time at any hill pool is 6:30 in the morning, before breakfast, when the mist is still tangled in the valley below. Swim, then towel off with a tumbler of Wayanad coffee in hand.
